Ribbon Technology was incorporated in 1971 specifically to produce steel fiber under license of several patents.
In 1973, Ribtec became the first Battelle Institute licensee of the new rapid solidification process Melt Extraction (ME). After developing ME, Ribtec produced and pioneered the use of rapidly solidified metal fibers for use in fiber reinforced refractories.
From this commercially successful base, Ribtec has taken rapid solidification technology (RST) to a new, higher level with the development of Melt Overflow (MO) RST. MO has improved the economics of rapid solidification technologies through elimination of an orifice while retaining comparable quench rates of 106C/second with a rotating heat extracting substrate and reduced operating variables. Because of the high quench rates attainable by MO, materials produced have highly desirable properties which are unattainable or too expensive to produce by conventional means.
